This next section is a personal favorite. Certainly, one of the most interesting things I've seen in Ecuador. On our last day in Otavalo, Jon, K and I left for the animal market at 6:30 am. This is what we found:

As we got closer to the market, we started mixing more with the locals and their animals for sale. It just kept getting bigger and bigger as we approached the designated market area.

As we were leaving, we noticed a big commotion and went to check it out. These guys were all standing around with their prized "Cocks", looking for a fight. As some were for sale, they would arrange some short fights to show off the birds. No, I'm not condoning Cock fighting, but when the they go at it and the dirt is flying, it's exciting! This is certainly a cultural tradition amongst those in the Andes and I'm glad we were able to witness it.

For those of you wondering, K rocked the trip! She made many friends with taxi drivers, waiters and vendors. She can now say she has many Latino lovers all over Ecuador. Thanks Jr. Richerts, for making the trip down to Ecuador and joining us on these adventures.

Well, look who just showed up in Quito... the Jr. Richerts. After Vilcabamba, we flew to Quito and met up with them for 3 days in Quito. This was the week we were most looking forward to. Let the fun begin. Check it out:

Carnival 2010: Vilcabamba

Yes, it's been another long stretch since the last SPORK post but I have a good excuse. Since mid December, we've been out of Guayaquil traveling for more than 7 weeks at various times. In February we had 2 weeks off for Carnival. As our time in Ecuador is quickly coming to an end, we treated this time as our last hurrah. The result was one of our best vacations as we toured the Andes Mountains and met up with the Jr. Richerts. I'll post the photos in 4 segments. Stop #1, Vilcabamba for 1 week of a little hammock living. Check it out:

This is where we spent 90% of our time. Simply sitting on our front patio, lounging in the hammocks, reading, playing cards and visiting with our neighbors. D finished 6 books! Seriously, there is nothing more I can write about. That is all we did for a week! Perfect.

The other 10% of our time? After feeling a little guilty of just lounging for so long, we explored the local trail system in the National Reserve which started 4 blocks away from our Hostal.

Cabin Fever

Last weekend we were lucky enough to be invited to Leo and Andrea's cabin near Cuenca, and we had an excellent time. Check it out:

It doesn't get any better then this! The cabin is a hand built, stone home with 4 bedrooms, on 15 acres in the Andes Mtns with a garden, river and trails. Dreamy!

The cabin is only 6 k away from Cajas National Park.

Mindo, Ecuador

Mindo, another adventure playground in the cloud forests of Ecuador. Our good friend, Jeremy (also known as Golden Wolf- long story that includes a hat with wolves embroidered in gold and late night howling), joined us on the trip, which was full of hiking, zip-lines, butterfly gardens, bird watching, riding on top of chivas, in the back of trucks, eating and reading. Check it out:

One thing I love about Ecuador is all the cable cars. They never get old. We took this cable car across the canyon to get to the trails and waterfalls. No release forms needed and you had the choice to stand on the ledge outside of the cart. D nixed that idea.

We were lucky enough to have the trail and waterfall to ourselves.

Now, that's a fun crew!

The next day, Jeremy and I did the zip-lines, which was 13 lines zig-zagging across multiple hill sides. The views were beautiful as we floated over the tree canopy.

Legs up, head back and press down on the cable with leather glove to stop. Only one of the guys in our group wasn't able to stop in time and ran into the tree. It was padded.

After the zip-lines, we dragged D away from her book and went to the butterfly garden.

She still loves me! After taking a vote with the 6th grade class, 16 of the 17 kids liked the long hair better. I think the other was a sympathy vote.

Cotopaxi-Quilotoa Ecuador

Last weekend we took advantage of our first three day vacation and flew to Quito for another mountain biking adventure in the Andes Mountains. We had 7 great friends join us for the two day adventure and we were able to experience some amazing places in this beautiful country. Check it out:

The adventure started at the top of Mount Cotopaxi, over 15,000 ft and the tallest active volcano in the world. Seriously, that's high.

No, those aren't shorts left behind by the last guest at this sketchy hostel, they were there to cover the vent. Classy! We had a group of 5 in 1 room, the bathroom door wouldn't stay closed and there was no shower curtain. Needless to say, we all got an extra 10 minutes of sleep by not showering. Classic.

Much of day 2 was riding through farmland as we descended back into a small market town. Having a chance to see the everyday life of the farmers was a personal favorite, that and having some of the little village kids along the way throw rocks at us. They were all smiles and waves just until you were about to pass them and then, whamooo! "Welcome to my village". Cute kids.

The Saturday market was full of all the usual Ecuadorian offerings: clothes, art, unidentifiable food, stray dogs and wonderful people.

Laguna Quilotoa was the main destination for us this trip. It is a spectacular crater lake within the Andes Mountains. We woke up early and hiked near the crater rim as the sun was rising.

August flew by here at the Richert Ranch as we had to pull a 180 and focus on showing up to work. To keep things exciting, we have a few new things going down to help tie us over until our first vacation time in October. Check it out:

A Morning Out

These next few photos were taken from the taxi while on our way to the Bahia (Black Market). This guy was taking advantage of "backrow seating" and probably feeling a little thirsty.

Danielle is having a hard time choosing which pirated DVD to buy. It can be tough decision due to the "organization" of this DVD shop. After a little hunting, we found the Seinfeld at the bottom of the pile on the floor. No problem, I picked up the stack while D swiped the series. One of the reasons that we choose this DVD shop is because they have a great return policy. Yes, you heard that right. An illegal, pirated DVD shop with a return policy. If you don't like it, return the DVD and get a new one. All this for only $1 per disc.

Obviously, we don't have a problem with the ethics of buying pirated goods.

Back At It

Welcome back to SPORK my amigo's! It's been a great summer and a much needed break with family, friends and all things American. We enjoyed every minute we were able to spend with all of you. We are so lucky to have such wonderful family and friends.

Today was our first day back in Guayaquil and I was quickly reminded what I was missing. Before I continue, I first need to remind you why I was most looking forward to coming back to Ecuador. Many of you asked this question and my response was always, "the daily adventure's." I knew this was the answer, but, when I thought about it, I couldn't really say WHAT the daily adventures were.......until today.

We get to our apartment at midnight and find that there is no running water. Not ideal for going to the bathroom, showering, cooking and washing dishes, but not all that big of an Ecuatrocity. How does it get fixed? My friend Paul comes over with a drill, axe, hammer and a desire to destroy things, which is great. We first needed to break into the locked, steel door to the outside room with the water pump. After drilling into the lock and punching it out with the hammer, we're in. At the time, this seemed perfectly normal until I was thinking about it after we had broken in and repaired the water pump. This wasn't normal by any other standards. The thought of calling a locksmith never was an option. Why would we do that when we had the tools to break in for free? After being back for less than 12 hours, this is the first example of "daily adventures" and it feels great to be back.

Vilcabamba, Ecuador

Last weekend we spent our spring break in the mountains of Vilcabamba. Life in this little city is very laid back and relaxing. We spent our days hiking, horseback riding, reading, eating, chatting with other tourists, playing cards and laughing. This city quickly moved into the favorites of Ecuador as the locals and scenery were wonderful. Check it out:

One of our morning activities was a 4 hr horse ride into the steep mountains and up to a waterfall. Once our guides found out we were from Idaho, they called us the Banditos and expected us to be naturals on our horses. Naturals we were not, especially on the ridge line with drop off's on both sides, but as we grew more comfortable, we were leading the group of running horses down the country roads on the way back. To be honest, this was due to the fact that our horses took our frightened death grip of the reins and our tense legs wrapped around their belly's to mean we were ready to hold on for a wild ride. Yep, I was puckered up. Yee-ha!

Every afternoon we sat on our veranda reading, laughing and enjoying the view.

Gator Eatin'

After a month of searching for the alligator that snatched Christian's camera and pinkie finger, the alligator was caught and the photos have been recovered. It was too late for the pinkie. Check it out:

If you look closely at this alligator soup, you'll find some tail, an eye and if you squint hard enough, Christian's pinkie. Tasty.

Last weekend D and I headed out to the coast for a Reading Marathon at Alandaluz, an Eco resort on the beach. We spent the day's testing various hammocks, reading, eating locally grown, organic food, taking walks on the beach and spotting Nun's. Check it out:

Banos, Ecuador: Round 4

What do you do after your Amazon tour where you have held a alligator, eaten piranha and spent the night with a drunken Shaman? Easy choice........you take the red eye bus to Banos and keep the adventures coming. With 4 days left of vacation, that's exactly what Christian and I did. Check it out:

After having cow stomach and rice for breakfast, which does not fall anywhere near the descriptive word, "tasty", we spent the morning hiking up the mountain side for this view of Banos, below. We then rented a go cart for the afternoon and drove around on the back country roads. Yes, in the picture above, that is Christian driving without his helmet buckled and rocking out on his ipod. Safety first does not apply to two guys traveling during Carnival. Note to future go cart renter's: be sure the headlights work before entering long, dark tunnels with cars coming the opposite way who think it is safe to pass because they don't see any oncoming traffic. I'm pretty sure I saw angel's with golden trumpet's.

The next day was spent taking a mountain bike tour of the area's many waterfall's.

Another great trip in the books.

Amazon Adventures

Carnival break. 17 hour bus ride. 6 hour canoe ride. 5 days in the Ecuadorian Oriente. 3 night's tent camping without sleeping bag or pad. 1 night sleeping on a tarp in the jungle, while a Shaman chants all night long. 3 Alligator's caught by hand, at night, in the dark. 1 Alligator consumed in a soup. 1 false encounter with evil spirits. 2 psychedelic dreams. 1 Pirahna breakfast. 1 too many sips of the infamous Chicha, a mildly alcoholic drink made by the village women who chew up corn and then spit it back into a bucket of warm water and then let it sit for a few days before consuming (refusing to drink would have been disrespectful). 4 river swims with Pink Dolphin's, Pirahna's, Alligator's and Turtles. Number of time's I pee'd in the river's- 0. 1 amazing adventure. Check it out:

After arriving in Lago Agrio via a 17 hour bus ride, Christian and I take our first motor canoe ride to Fidel's (our guide) village. We spent the afternoon at his home, pictured below, with his family while we waited for the rest of our friends to arrive the next morning.

That first night we camped at Fidel's 2nd home, the river camp.

I made a new friend who was very interested in my digital camera.

Our first Oriente sunset which was pointing the way to the next day's 7 hour canoe ride into the jungle.

Our long canoe ride ended deep in the Ecuadorian Amazon, near the border of Peru and only 25 miles south of the Colombian border. On our way we spotted the very rare fresh water Pink Dolphin and spent some time watching it feed. We set up our base camp on this small island in the Cuyabena Reserve.

The next day we spent the afternoon canoeing through small water ways, hiking, and watching monkeys, turtles, beautiful birds and another spotting of a Pink Dolphin. This river pictured above is where we would later spot alligator's, fish for pirahna and yes, go swimming.

Equipped with rubber boots, we went on a hike through the forest. It was full of lush green vegetation, insects, birds and the canopy floor was covered in sitting, mosquito breeding water.

During our hike we found some Tagua nuts (black and tan nuts at the top) which we cut open and drank the water from the little pockets inside. If left alone, the water eventually turns to a gel, which we also ate, and then hardens into the Tagua nut that is commonly used for jewelry. The red seeds above are from a different tree and used by various tribes as dye and body paint. Of course we created our own tribe and painted each other for this photo below.

Grrrrrr! Each evening we went alligator hunting by canoe in the dark blackness of the night. With Fidel in the front scanning the river bank with a flashlight, we would motor along quietly looking to spot the bright orange eye's of an alligator. Once spotted, we would motor over to them, turn the motor off and glide the canoe right next to the alligator. Mr. BAACH (Brave A$$ Alligator Catcher Man) would then lean his entire upper body over the side of the canoe, steadily hover his open hand over the back neck of the alligator and then...........all hell would break loose. In an instant, he would strike at the back neck of the alligator. Both alligator and Mr. BAACH would thrash around while murky brown water would splash everywhere. It always took a couple seconds to determine which one would be the winner. Let me remind you this is in the dark, with a hand held flashlight and BARE HANDS! In total Mr. BAACH caught 3 out of 4 alligator's and kept all 10 digits.

The next morning we tried our hand at fishing for Pirahna. As you can see, it was very uneventful. Our biggest catch, pictured below, was a sardine.

Here we are returning back to Fidel's village during a 7 hour canoe ride.

After arriving at Fidel's village we opted to spend the night with the Shaman and experience a healing ceremony. We had no idea what we were getting into. We took a canoe ride into a remote section of the Amazon and started hiking. Fidel stayed back with his family and sent us with a different guide, who, as luck would turn out, got lost. After leaving us in the middle of the forest to go "find the way", he returned and guided us to this open air, grass hut. It was pitch black, the Shaman was smoking in a hammock next to a small fire, chanting. We were told to spread out the black tarp we brought and that is where we would all sleep, without tents, sleeping bags and jackets for pillows. As we shined our flashlight around our newly spread out black tarp, we spotted tarantula's, scorpions, cockroaches on steroids, and all sorts of other insects. No joke!

The Shaman, who was drunk, kept smoking 1 cigarette after another, chanting in his hammock for about an hour while we rested on the tarp waiting to begin. Once he was ready, we each sat in front of him 1 at a time while he performed a small ceremony to clear our minds and drive away any evil spirits. We were then offered a form of cactus juice which would, through that nights dreams, show us how to resolve any problems we had. The next morning there were stories of outer space, endless free falling and living life without being able to speak. Unfortunately, there were no stories of resolved problems. 3 others and I did not drink the "happy juice" as we offered to protect the others from the rumored side effects. Looking back, it was I night were I most felt alive while camping, totally exposed to the Amazon elements.

Fever Proof

In preparation for my upcoming Amazon trip, today I went downtown and received my Yellow Fever shot. My experience: Entered front door which was in an alley. Door opened into a small room which contained 2 plastic chairs (the nurse was in one and I sat in the other), a black file cabinet, glass bottles with dark brown liquid and hand written labels and a midget sized bed (no offense if you are a small person.......but even you might think it was small). I simply traded my Passport number for a shot which looked to come from a "sterile" wrap. I have not yet determined which is the greater risk.......... not getting the shot and getting Yellow Fever or receiving the shot and becoming infected with ibby-jibby Ecua alley germs. Employment Hazard

Working with 3 year old's has its risk's. The other day while playing an "organized" game with the nursery class, one of the kids came up behind me and wrapped himself around the back of my leg. This particular boy has made a habit of getting a free ride on my leg while I walk around but this time, he added a new surprise. After taking a couple steps, he took a bite out of my ass! The sharp pain of 3 year old lock-jaw sent me into the air. The little twerp quickly bailed off my leg and ran around with a big grin on his face. If I was 29 years younger, I'd return the favor. These kids make me laugh everyday and leave me feeling very lucky to get paid for playing games, receiving hugs and chasing birds with my little buddy's.

Riding Buddy

Well, it's "Mini Iggy" season here in Guayaquil and we have hundred's of little Iguana's running all over. This little guy and I had the same idea on how to spend our Saturday morning. Check it out:

Hmmm, what's Aunt Jamima cooking up here? Does she have two different pancake recipes? One doesn't meet U.S. standards but exceeds Ecuador's? Not that this would be the first consumed item that didn't meet U.S. standards. If I go down, somebody check the hot cake mix.

Safety First

Now, I'm sure we can all recall times when, as children, our parents didn't put us in a proper child's seat with what seems like today's standard of 10 seat belts holding the child in. I can remember my brother and I riding in what could be considered the trunk of our yellow, 2 seat'er Corvette, or standing in the middle of the front seat in Grandpa's "big yellow boat." Being in a 3rd world country, we see many various forms of child transport, but this one was a first. This photo is of a truck taxi in Banos where we watched a mother place her youngest daughter, the one in the stroller, into the back of the truck. Basically, a car seat with wheels to help propel the child up and over any accident that might occur. Genius! No, seriously, don't worry, that obviously wouldn't happen in this case. You can tell by the great hold Mom and Sister have on the stroller. Check it out:

Bogota, Colombia

I've got lots of photos for you so lets keep this short. Bogota is a beautiful city, by far the most advanced we've been to so far. Everywhere we turned, the city was decorated with Christmas lights, Juan Valdez was tempting us with aroma's of premium Colombian coffee, narrow cobble stone streets with Colonial buildings splashed with various bright colors were drawing us in for, "just one more stroll", the people were so friendly they would often respond to a, "Thank you" with, "With great pleasure", and the one thing that had us both continualy saying, "We could live here", bike lanes on nearly every major road. Colombia has a great saying in their tourism advertising; "Colombia, the only risk is wanting to stay". We'll be back. Check it out:

Here I am making some new friends.

The Gold Musuem in Bogota is often refered to as the best in the world. It was certainly very impressive and a memorable part of the trip.

We were able to take a funicular train to Cerro de Monserrate on one of the mountain peaks that looks over the city. It is also hikeable but how often do you get to say, "I rode a funicular train today"? Funicular, just the word alone is awesome.

Here we have the oldest restuarant in Colombia. It has been serving bread, cheese and hot chocolate since 1816. Belive it or not, the bread was not stale.

Just outside of Bogota is the worlds largest underground salt mine. A salt cathedral has been carved out and is open for tours and weddings. The tunnels are endless and the neon colors against the white salt walls are fascinating.

No, this in not our, "scared to be in Colombia" expression, it's our, "Colombia is so exciting" expression. Though, we certainly missed friends and family, Colombia made for a very special Christmas. We hope you all had a wonderfull Holiday's and wish for you, great adventures in 2009.

Ecuador: Feliz Ano Nuevo!

What's better than watching a great fire work show? Answer: About a hundred guy's all holding lighters and blowing stuff up. Nothing brings in the New Year like a highly unorganized, bring your own explosives event that includes paper mache characters stuffed with fireworks, a champagne bottle for all (teens included) and, just when you thought you've got enough explosives, bring another bag. Don't get me wrong, we still had the same great fireworks you would see on TV from all over the world, they were just set off by guys holding a bottle of bubbly and giving out high fives like they had just won the Super Bowl. Check it out:

All day on New Year's Eve, we saw cars like this with different cartoon and real life characters on their way to the midnight funeral. The tradition is to make a paper mache character of someone you would like to leave in the old year, fill it with fireworks and light it on fire at midnight.

This was certainly one of the best New Year celebrations we've had together and the experience was incredible. Happy New Year's!

It looks as though we have our first Ecua tradition. For the 2nd year in a row now, we have traveled to the adventure capital of Ecuador, Banos, for the Thanksgiving break. Last year we went mountain biking, hiking, crossed rivers on suspension bridges and cable carts and repelled down waterfalls. This year we went white water rafting and then followed that up with a 30 mile mountain bike trip the next day. Check it out:

This is the only photo I have to show you from our rafting trip. There was no such thing as calm water between rapids to rest, or to take photos. After going up and over large exposed boulders and going into class 4 rapids sideways, the only reason we didn't loose anyone overboard was due to quick hands grabbing the feet of other rafters on their way out.

Here is a shot of the Tungurahua Volcano that looks over Banos. Last year this volcano erupted the day after we left Banos.

Not only does Banos have excellent adventures, the city is a great place to come back and rest. Most of the city is made up of small one way streets, great resturaunts, coffee shops and colorful markets.

This is the first Fly-Fisherman I've come across in Ecuador. It looked like he had rigged up some raw bamboo and fishing line for his rod. He would simply toss his fly up river, watch it float down until it took all his line and then do it over. We watched for about 5 minutes but he didn't catch anything.

Alive and Kickin'

Well, almost. 1 week of home rest and no walking. The surgery went well, mainly because they chose the correct leg and I was able to watch the entire surgery on the moniter while it took place. There was certainly some Ecua experiences to keep things exciting. I'd say the biggest one came when the nurse tried to remove the IV needle while it was still taped to my wrist. It turned into a bloody mess and a bent needle! D tried helping ease my nerves when we first got there by saying after hearing the printer go off, "Do you think they are printing the instructions?" It was possible. As for now, all is well, so thank you all for your prayers and well wishes. With me at home loosing my mind, be looking for a flurry of posts over the next few day's.

Down and Out

Well, a little bad news. A couple months ago I tore my meniscus in my left knee and now need arthroscopic surgery. Surgery in Ecuador?........Yeah, we share the same concern! I will be going in for surgery this Thursday and if all goes well, I'll still have 2 legs. I should be able to put weight on my left leg within a few days, walking normaly within 2 weeks and playing futbol again after 6 weeks. The Dr. has promised me a DVD of my surgery so more adventure photos to come.

Sunday we ventured downtown and went to the big open air food market to check out where many of the locals grocery shop. I'll be honest, I certainly wasn't planning on buying anything because I usually find the words "open air" and "food " to be a bad combination in downtown Guayaquil. I was pleaseantly surprised to find hundreds of venders selling fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, fish and other various supplies in an organized, clean environment. Check it out:

Chickens anyone? In Ecuador, EVERYTHING on the chicken is eaten. My buddy Mark can tell you how chicken feet soup tasted......and the problems it caused during digestion. Check out the utility bike ready to haul home some food for the whole family.

Yes, that's D up ahead with a bag full of veggies, fruit and pasta. We couldn't resist since everything looked so good and it was so cheap. A bag full of fruit or veggies was never more than a $1. Eating good has never been so affordable! In a country where there is so much poverty, Ecuadorians are very fortunate to live in a climate where such healthy fruits and vegitables are grown and sold at a minumal price.

Spy Cam is Back

It's been a long time since the Spy Cam was out capturing some Guayaquil action, but today D and I ventured out by bus to see what was going on. Check it out:

Today is game day with one of the local futbol teams. This guy pulled up a chair in the middle of the sidewalk to watch a TV through a store front window. No cable needed when you have a portable chair.

Our final destination was of course the DVD store. Not exactly legal by American standards but certainly legal by Ecuadorian. 70 cent DVD's and TV series stacked floor to ceiling. For the record, we would never think of buying such pirated material. That said, I can confirm that the quality of these pirated works are very impressive. I hear that they even have the Special Features available.

Only 2 more months until the rainy season hits and washes out our favorite trail.

October Adventures

This last weekend we went to Salinas for the 3 day weekend and some Marlin fishing. We rented a house on a private beach and had a great time celebrating with friends. As for the fishing, well, we had a great boat ride. After 9 hours of fishing, our only excitement came when a Marlin lunged at the bait with such force it snaped the 50 weight fishing line. "The one that got away" was the key to having a successful trip. Had the line not snapped, I would have a much bigger fish tale for you. Now, the Marlin is the one with the great story about how he got his sweet nose ring.

Fortunately this was the 1st boat on the way to the 2nd boat......the Mac Arther.

Last Thursday we went to a professional baseball game. Yes, I'm as surprised as you to hear there is baseball in Ecuador. There are a total of 3 teams who play a full season against each other before the 2 best teams play a championship game. There are more players on the field then fans in the seats. Hot dogs and bevy's sell for a $1 each and if you catch a foul ball, throw it back. It's the only game ball. Amazingly, in their baseball history, they have had 1 player who went on to play in the Major Leauges for the Seattle Mariners.

WARNING: Blood and detailed description follows. Last Wednesday I took an accidental elbow to the chops while playing soccer. My lip was split so wide that I was able to fit the entire end of a Q-tip inside my lip to clean it out! After a trip to the ER the next morning, it turns out I didn't need stitches and it should heal on its own. I haven't been able to say the letter "B" without my lips sticking together and I'm certainly not getting any kiss action from D. The other story is simply, "You should have seen the other guy!"

Spork is back! There have been many busy days since our last post but the adventures have continued. Most of them take place Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 8:35 and 9:10 AM. It's called Nursery PE where I do "physical education" with 23 2-3 year olds with runny noses, poopy pants and 2 minute attention spands. How many times does 2 minutes go into a 35 minute class period? 17, which is also the number of different activities needed to keep these kids corralled in city limits. Yes, we play a lot of "Chase that bird" and "Catch Mr. R". This last week, I had to bring in a HazMat cleanup team to nuke the tumble mats of the snot spots left where each child rolled over face down. The best part of this adventure is that I get to hold 23 little mini hands each class and there is a race to see who gets to sit by Mr. R for stretches.

This last weekend, I had a chance to go to the biggest sporting event in Guayaquil, The Classico, where the 2 futbol teams from Guayaquil play each other. By no means is this a "friendly" game between both teams and fans. This game included truck loads of riot police, home made flares, confetti made from confidential business records, confetti catching fire from home made flares, 1 coach ejected, 2 players from the same team ejected, 1 player playing with his arm in a sling, 1 fist fight among fans supporting the same team, and 3 goals scored by the apposing team within the first 20 minutes. The last one, most of all, enraged the fans so much that water bottles were being thrown at players and coaches while also recieving not so nice comments about their madres (mothers). The most alarming point came when our Ecuadorian friends suggested we leave for safety concerns if there was another goal scored. News flash for gringos: If an Ecuadorian is concerned about safety, you should be no where near that area! Fortunately, there were no more goals. Check it out:

On our bus ride from Cuenca to Riobamba, this was the drivers view of our washed out road.

As if a washed out road wasn't exciting enough, later down the road in the high mountains, there was a landslide completely covering the road. This left us with 2 options. Wait for the tractors to clear it out or drive over it and keep schedule. Of course the bus driver chose the second option and with the help of a few spotters, we survived. Riobamba, the arm pit of Ecuador. We arrived at 3 in the afternoon, walked the city for an hour and then made sure we had bus tickets out of town the next morning.

So, off to Banos we went. The best outdoor playground in Ecuador. We jumped on top of a Chiva Bus and toured the waterfalls, rivers and mountains.

Another great thing about Ecuador: Every car going by can potentially be a taxi. We completed our hike to the waterfall (above) before the rest of the group and were eager to get some dinner. So, we simply walked out the highway and whistled at the first truck we saw. One windy, rainy and 3 tunnel ride later, we were back in town.

We spent our 8 year Anniversary in Bahia de Caraquez along the central coast of Ecuador. It was a great little eco-city with a beautiful hotel, great restuarants and a very laid back atmosphere.

Besides being one of the only cities in Ecuador that has a recycling program, they also have city bike taxis instead of taxi cars. The city is so small it only takes about 10 minutes to get from one side of town to the other, with lugage.

Pick out a color and quality. It takes anywere between 3 days and 4 months to weave a single hat depending on quality.

Shape the hat in a steamer

Choose your brim size and have a sweet Senorita sew it in place

Trim the brim

Sew in the sweat band

Choose a band for the outside, glue it on

Prep the steamer for one last shaping

Cook it

Have someone else pull the hat out of the steamer so you don't burn your hands

A Silvers Tour

For the last couple weeks of June, we were able to tour around Ecuador with Papa Ron and Mama Jan. We had many adventures that included crowded bus rides, fast taxi's with loud music, a hotel room door flying open in the middle of the night, near decapitation on a city bus, spur of the moment change in travel plans and of course, lots and lots of laughter. We enjoyed every moment of this memorable trip. Check it out:

Yes, this is where we spend most of our time. D in the hammock reading while I practice holding my breath under water. I can swim 3 laps without coming up for air. I'm also working on access up the walls for swan dives into the pool.

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu.......incredible. Hiking the Inca Trail was just as spectacular as the actual ruins. It was amazing to see the Inca's way of life, history and beautiful stone structures. More so than any of our other adventures, this experience left me with a strong desire to explore the world and be open to all ways of life. Check it out:

Day 4 started with a 4 AM wake up and on the trail by 5 AM. We raced up the trail to be at Machu Picchu for sunrise only to find it covered in the morning clouds. We sat on a hillside and waited for the clouds to clear. It was awesome to see little patches of this mountain top city as it cleared up. We were rewarded with a sunny afternoon and a tour through the ancienct city.

Ok, lets re-trace our steps. I'll start from the begining and get you caught up on our summer adventures. It's been all play and no work so I can't promise you that there will be another post tomorrow, or the day after, or even next week. Mainly because we now have a pool, hot tub, hammocks and nothing to do between 9 and 5. Yes, we are living the good life. Check it out:

There is a long standing tradition where at the end of the school year, IA staff playes a futbol game vs the students' personal drivers and body guards. There is a coveted trophy that is talked about all year and a big lunch afterword. The IA team is mostly the same guys I play with every Wednesday, which means that yes, I was the only gringo...........for BOTH teams. Team "Tough Guys" (this is how I refered to the other team) were excaxtly that........tough guys who when they weren't protecting Guayaquils' elite, were in the gym lifting weights. To ensure us IA "Little Guys" could play a fair game, a professional referee was hired for the game. At the end of the very tough and brusing game, we won 1-0. The trophy was ours for another year! As we were sitting around after the game my fellow teammates were feeling so good about our victory that they decided to challenge the other team to another game. Now in Ecuador, there is always something to be won with every game played. So, my team thought it would be a good idea to bet their Beer $ against the other team's Beer $, in hopes of doubling it. We lost. Some might say game 2 was the one to win but apparently the trophy was all that mattered.

Below are a few spotting's around Guayaquil over the last couple weeks. Check it out:Sammy the Goat playing tug-of-war with an unwilling poor sport. One of Ecuador's many handymen. This guy created a homemade cab extension for his truck. Look at all the new leg room with seat recline.
I followed this guy and received a fresh chicken sandwich.

Motorcycles are often the "family car" in Ecuador. This family of 3 is zipping down the main road pictured below. Only the bread winner of the family is entitled to a helmet. Jr. certainly has the best seat.

These are school kids in PE class. The school is located in part of this building without any type of playground or recreation area. There were some very creative games being played.
A few of us guys from the school attended another futbol game. Security has been increased due to a spectator death last year. You can see we chose the "family friendly" section below.
The section with all the flags is what we would call the rowdy section. There is no security checks to get in on that side. Anything goes!

Friday D and I spent the day on a 5 hr guided hike through Cerro Blanco. You may remember we had been to the park before but this was our first trip during the rainy season. The park was green and full of life. Check it out:

This was our first tarantula sighting in Ecuador.

This was our second. Why so blurry? Well, just before I could take the picture, our guide was quick to point out that this tarantula has the ability to shoot out small barbs as a defense. If hit, you'll experience "complications" with your heart and lungs. So, needless to say, my hand wasn't as steady while shooting. I took the photo. We moved on. Everybody lived.

Last weekend was Boys/Girls weekend here in Ecuador. The girls went to Montanita (check out Living the Good Life for Danielle's amazing adventure. I'm so proud of her) and the dudes went exploring in Machala and Isla Jambeli. Machala is the banana capitol of the world and Isla Jambeli is a favorite vacation destination for the locals of southern Ecuador.

Knowing the girls would be doing what they do best, spend $, we chose to travel light for as little as possible. Many luxuries were left behind such as a change of clothes, surf gear and expensive camera's. It was all about cheap transportation, $5 hostels, meals for $3.50 or less and and creative entertainment. Here's the breakdown:

3 1/2 hr bus ride to Machala: $4.20

Boat ride to Isla Jambeli: $2.40

Hostel: $5 the first night. $6 the second night. What did we get for an extra $1? A towel and blankets.

Most expensive dinner: $3.50 which included chicken feet, liver and heart all in a tasty soup. Chicken breast with rice, beans and fried plantains. Only Mark can comment on how the feet tasted. Rumor has it the feet are all skin and bones, no meat. Also takes a little more time to digest.

A night of pool: $2 an hr.

Entrance in to the local Museum: $.50.

Meeting Jonathan from Machala and having him show us around, leaving the casino with more money than when we entered, swimming, walking on the beach, climbing the lighthouse, building a raft out of bamboo in an effort to get to Peru, fire jumping over the midnight bonfire (only 1 shoe was melted) and telling naughty jokes: $Free!

Ahead is the small port for Isla Jambeli. The boat ride from Machala is beautiful as you navigate through this narrow waterway and coast lined mangroves.

Much of the west facing coastline was covered with wood and trash. Ecuador has been drowned in rainfall, much more than recent years which has caused this mess on the beach. All of the rivers have swelled and flushed fallen branches and trash from many mountain villages into the ocean. Unfortunately for this island community, much of it ends of on their beaches.

At this billiard, a few boards were placed over the sand with a pool table set somewhat evenly on top. We played a few hours of pool while the waves broke only 40 yards away.

In an effort to paddle to Peru, we thought we would make good use of the driftwood collected on shore and build a raft. We collected bamboo and plastic strips as the experienced sailor, Brian, tied the raft together with his "fancy" boat knots. After long goodbye's, hugs and messages given for my wife, I ventured into the water with my new raft and 1 coconut. The first and only problem to this expedition was the most disastrous. The raft was not big enough and sank under my weight. At about 20 yards off shore, I was forced to retreat and head back to shore. To add to my crushed dreams of Peruvian explorations, in my battle to stay afloat on my "mini" raft, it took one last thing from me as we separated. My wedding ring. As the raft sank, I was committed to ride it down to the bottom of the sea, which was about 5 feet deep at that point. When a large 2 ft wave knocked me off, the ass end of the raft reached out and the plastic cording stripped my ring off my finger. After much time combing the bottom of the ocean floor with help from my compassionate friends, we were forced to concede my ring and our raft to Mother Ocean. Peru would have to wait until June for my arrival.

The gentleman in the orange cap was the owner of this museum. It was his private collection of shells and marine life from around the world. It was one of the coolest museum's I've been in as it represented this one man's passion for the sea.

Day 4 in Quito:

On our last day we went to the Oswaldo Guayasamin Museum, Ecuador's most famous artist. In addition to his own art, he collected pre-Colombian pottery and various crucifixes.

"Although considered an expressionist, the humanitarian in Osvaldo Guayasamin is said to be the biggest reoccurring theme in his work. His work is said to reflect some of the pain and misery that humanity has had to endure. In this regard, nearly all of his work denounces all the violence and genocide that Oswaldo Guayasamin is said to have born witness to during his life-time." Destination360.com

Day 2 in Quito:

Our first event of the day was the Teleferiqo which took us up into the mountains high above Quito. We enjoyed great views of the city, surrounding villages and a hike at nearly 13,000 feet.

Parque La Carolina: One of Quito's largest parks specifically designed for physical sports. Paved bike path, bicycle jump park, separate walking/jogging path, multiple futbol fields, basketball courts, volleyball courts, outdoor exercise equipment, botanical garden and of course an outdoor food court. The land space committed and multiple uses of this park certainly rivals the city parks I've seen in the U.S.

With spring break coming up, D and I were both looking for cool weather, new adventures and a few extra luxuries such as great restaurants, coffee shops, English book titles and travel by plane. After ruling out the U.S. and Europe (due to me bumming around and only working a couple hours a day), we packed our jackets, camera's and jumped on a plane to Quito, the capitol of Ecuador. Great times were had and as you'll see over the next four daily posts, Quito is a wonderful city:

Another Wednesday afternoon adventure lead me to the Civic Center and Forest Park:

No, this guy isn't overly thirsty. He is an "Ecua-Pop Machine". 10 cents will get you a shot of Cola. Also, check out this bus. You can see through the rear window that it is full with people. If that didn't tip you, maybe the guy hanging out the side will. This picture is taken just after I got off the bus. I didn't get a seat but fortunately I didn't have exit through the window, Danielle style.

Yesterday between classes (working part time is great- try it) I hopped on a bus to check out the Malecon in Guayaquil (boardwalk along the river).

For those of you stuck in winter land, I know just what you are going through. Yes, it's the complete opposite with 80 degree days, sweat, fans, lush green palm trees and emerald green water instead of 30 degree days, chills, warm fires, bare trees and white snow. Either way, you can be wishing for the other. That said, this last weekend I didn't miss winter one bit. Our weekend included body boarding, siestas in a hammock, reading with our feet in the sand, fresh cut coconut and pineapple from the trees in the back yard and breaded fish caught that day. In addition to all this play, we were there to check out a very poor coastal community where we hope to provide some much needed community service with the kids from InterAmerican Academy. The history and founding of this community is inspiring as the focus is to give it's children a chance to succeed. In a community where most kids didn't stay in school past 3rd or 4th grade, they are now going to college. Please check out this website, Homes of Hope to see what amazing service has already taken place. D and I are very excited to get involved.

I have been hired at InterAmerican Academy to cover elementary technology and a couple music classes for the remainder of the year. Those who know me, know I am in way over my head. Let's just say that for 2nd grade music today, we played soccer. I'm now accepting any advice on how to sing on key and how to turn on a computer.

Bus Terminal

Guayaquil- City of 3 million- Carnival holiday where nearly 1/2 the city is traveling for the 5 vacation days- Bus Terminal- The most affordable means of travel for locals- No A/C or air- thousands of people pressed against each other- Hot and sweaty- people holding on to each others shoulders and waists so nobody can cut in- Fewer bus seats available than people in line- Parents holding small children to keep them from getting trampled- 3 hours in line- women breast feeding- 1 gal resting her head on my arm- Crowds of people yelling and pushing when people would cut in line- Security officers pushing their way through to remove "the cutter" before the altercation became physical- Family's sending their kids to the front of the line in hopes security wouldn't be so forceful with them (this tactic did not work)- 80% of the people were respectng the system and looking out for each other- At one point I slightly stepped to the side of the line to block a would be "cutter" and security wanted to send me to the back of the line- My fellow line mates all argued on my behalf and the security guard let me keep my place- Once the tickets were for sale, any inch of space we had was taken as everyone pressed toward the window- Everyone yelling, waving $ in their fists- My good Ecuadorian friend Christian, which I was very lucky to have with me during this experience, made it to the counter first- He was yelling back at me for money- After giving him a $20, he yelled back, "More money!"- I frantically emptied my pockets into his hand- He later told me we needed exact change- After lots of pushing, shoving, sweating and yelling, we had 4 tickets and were headed to Puerto Lopez- more importantly, we had seats- The isle was packed with people standing, kids sleeping on the floor and puppy's roaming for the 4 hr bus ride- No bathroom stops- As eventful as this experience was, the return trip would trump this bus ride in excitement- Multiple people were sold the same seat- People yelling and pushing for our seats- Danielle and Brandon were forced to jump out the bus window (See Living the Good Life for details)- Tosha, 5 months pregnant, pushing her way down the isle and out the front- Once again, too many people all trying to leave at the same time with too few of busses- People riding on the roof of the bus- Busses far beyond compacity were racing each other up a 2 lane road with on coming traffic- Trucks so full of people they were riding on the bumper- Multiple cars and busses stranded on the side of the road with engine troubles or blown out tires- Safe arrival in Guayaquil 5 hours later.

Boobies

Big ones, little ones, old ones, young ones, wet ones, hairy ones, blue footed, masked........I LOVE BOOBIES! There were so many and I was excited to find that these boobies wouldn't run when I reached out to touch or take a photo of them. This paradise was at Isla de la Plata, an island 25 miles offshore of Puerto Lopez. It is apart of Machalilla National Park and referred to as the "Poor man's Galapagos" due to it being close and featuring some of the same wildlife. We were able to share this experience with our good friends from Boise, the Bentz's. The boat trip and island visit included a long hike, snorkeling, beautiful cliffs, bright blue waters and of course, plenty of birds. I have been looking forward to saying, "Check out these boobies".........

Fire and Rain

Yes, there has been a lack of funny at Spork. Sorry to say, this entry will be no different. I have been forced to work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. This is not what I agreed to when moving to Ecuador. All of my witty responses have been used up on students questions like: "Why do we have to work on art in art class?" "Can I study for my science test?" "Can I draw a pack of cigarettes?" Good news: As of this Friday, I will be unemployed again. I will be more focused on providing you with the best Ecuadorian entertainment possible. Within reason, Grandma is tech savy. I know most of you are surfing the internet while "working" so Spork hopes to bring you a little warm fuzzy during the work day. We'll be laughing next week.

Ever hear of the Eiffel Tower? Well, Mr. Gustave Eiffel also spent some time in Guayaquil and designed this lesser know building, Mercado Sur Guayaquil. It is made of mostly glass and features many of the same iron charactoristics as the Eiffel Tower.

Friends and Family

D and I had a great time visiting friends and family over the holidays. Most of the time was spent eating, talking and couch lounging but we did manage to get out for a couple adventures. We are now back to Guayaquil and instantly in the rainy season with a high humidity. In Ecuador, if your not sweating, you're not having a good time!

After spending time in a 3rd world country and then stepping into Hollywood, it was a freeing reminder that latest fashion, the newest cars and large homes are not necessities of survival or happiness. That's me holding up T-Mac.

Banos: An Adventure Orgasim

I'm still breathing heavy and my body is a flutter. Biking, hiking, a cable car ride across a canyon, suspension bridges, canyoning and yes, bungee jumping. We have found an adventurers playground! This was the best weekend I've had with Danielle since being in Ecuador. The pictures tell much more so let's get to it:

Birthday Dinner

Last Wednesday (my birthday), D and I had the privilege of being invited to the U.S. Consulates home for Thanksgiving dinner along with some other teachers and the Peace Corp. Once we got past security, we enjoyed a traditional Thanksgiving feast, service by those dressed in penguin suits, story's of service work in Ecuador and an impromptu piano concert. The host even brought out a candle and the group sang Happy Birthday for me in 4 different languages. Which 4, I don't know! The family of the U.S. Consulate are wonderful people and it made for a very memorable Birthday. I'll be honest, I couldn't help but take a keepsake. I safely tucked it where the sun don't shine and ran like a man runs from seeing Larry Craig's hand waving under his bathroom stall. Check it out:

30 in Ecuador

I'm excited to be experiencing my 30th birthday in Ecuador. I may not have drinkable tap water, hot water, decent cheese, sweet singletrack trails, consistant electricity, a job (no complaints) or friends and family here to help celebrate, but I am experiencing something I never thought I'd be doing in my previous 29 years. I wouldn't give it up for any missed luxury's. Each day I wake up to a wonderful wife, palm trees, iguanas, multi colored birds and a new culture to be explored. Everyday there is a real possibility I may see something I have never seen before. Living the good life. I have no doubt this experience will change how I live my next 30 years. Cheers!
